What Is 3D Secure (3DS) and Why Does It Matter for Your Business?

Online payment fraud is a growing concern for businesses of all sizes. 3D Secure adds an extra layer of protection to online transactions, helping merchants reduce fraud, improve payment security and build customer trust.

As more consumers shop and pay online, businesses face a constant challenge: making transactions secure without creating unnecessary friction at checkout. That’s where 3D Secure (3DS) comes in. This authentication technology helps verify that the person making an online purchase is the legitimate cardholder, reducing the risk of unauthorized transactions.

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure, commonly known as 3DS, is a security protocol designed to add an extra layer of authentication to online credit and debit card payments.

Originally introduced by Visa as Verified by Visa and Mastercard as Mastercard SecureCode, the technology has evolved into a more advanced authentication standard known as EMV 3-D Secure, often referred to as 3DS2.

Today, it is supported by major card networks, including Visa and Mastercard, and helps protect both merchants and consumers against online payment fraud.

How does 3D Secure work?

When a customer makes an online purchase, 3D Secure helps the card-issuing bank verify their identity before approving the transaction.

Here’s how it works:

  1. The customer checks out. They enter their credit or debit card information on your website.
  2. The transaction is evaluated. The issuing bank assesses transaction information to determine whether additional authentication is needed.
  3. Identity is verified. For higher-risk transactions, the customer may be asked to confirm their identity using a one-time password, biometric authentication or a banking app.
  4. The payment proceeds. Once authentication is completed successfully, the transaction can proceed to authorization.

With 3DS2, many transactions can be authenticated in the background without requiring any additional action from the customer.

What are the benefits of 3D Secure for your business?

1. Reduce payment fraud

By adding an extra layer of cardholder authentication, 3D Secure helps reduce unauthorized transactions and protects your business against fraudulent purchases.

2. Reduce chargeback risks

Certain transactions successfully authenticated through 3D Secure may qualify for a fraud-related chargeback liability shift, transferring responsibility from the merchant to the card issuer, subject to card network rules.

3. Build customer confidence

A secure checkout experience reassures customers that their payment information is protected, helping strengthen trust in your online business.

4. Maintain a smooth checkout experience

Unlike older authentication methods, 3DS2 uses risk-based authentication to minimize unnecessary verification steps, helping businesses balance security and convenience.

Does 3D Secure affect conversion rates?

Adding security to checkout shouldn’t mean making it harder for customers to complete their purchases.

Earlier versions of 3D Secure often required customers to enter a password or complete an additional verification step, sometimes leading to abandoned transactions.

3DS2 was designed to make authentication faster and less intrusive. By sharing additional transaction information with the issuing bank, it allows many legitimate transactions to proceed without interrupting the checkout experience. However, some transactions may still require additional verification, and the impact on conversion rates depends on how authentication is implemented.

Does 3D Secure involve additional fees?

Yes, 3D Secure (3DS) can cost merchants more, but it depends on their payment processor, gateway and pricing agreement. 3D Secure is not necessarily included in standard credit card processing fees. Some payment providers charge an additional authentication fee, while others include it in their existing pricing.

Does your business need 3D Secure?

If your business accepts online credit or debit card payments, 3D Secure can be an important part of your fraud prevention strategy.

It’s particularly relevant for e-commerce stores, subscription businesses and companies processing card-not-present transactions.

While 3D Secure isn’t universally mandatory for every online transaction in Canada, it may be required in certain markets or situations, depending on applicable regulations and payment network rules.
